Popoyo Hotel Feature: SUYO Cabañas
SUYO Cabañas just might be the best value beachfront hotel on Popoyo’s sands. For $35 a night, move into a private cabaña right on the beach, complete with a hammock, full kitchen, and of course, ocean views.
I write this post fresh off a three-day stay at the tranquil SUYO Cabañas, an affordable beachfront hotel along Playa Popoyo and within walking distance of several surf spots. I landed here after a less-than-ideal dorm situation further down the beach and fell in love with the peace, pace, and privacy of this hidden gem of the Popoyo hotel and hostel scene.
It didn’t take long to fall into a rhythm at SUYO, with its beachfront terrace perfect for morning yoga sessions, communal kitchen stocked with everything you need to feel at home, and my own private porch that doubled as both a morning coffee perch from the swaying hammock and oceanfront office from its chair and table.
The intimate six cabaña layout with shared spaces, like the kitchen and beachfront terrace, meant it was both quiet and social - the best of both worlds by my standards. As it’s a slightly higher price point than the hostels in the area, it doesn’t attract the party crowds and backpackers, as much as it does down-to-earth couples, solo travelers, and more mature surfers looking for a quiet spot to rest up between surf sessions.
I loved my stay at SUYO and will definitely return should I find myself in Popoyo again sometime. The value can’t be beat. You’re beachfront in your own private low-key luxe cabaña at as low as $35USD a night with access to a full kitchen and centrally located between surf points, the local markets, and a variety of amazing restaurants and yoga studios. Tell me that’s not a steal.

The Cabañas
There are a total of six two-person cabañas, all of which are equipped with a private and ocean-facing porch, hammock, chair, and small table, plus a personal sink for face and hand-washing in your room. The king (two twins pushed together) and queen-size beds are draped with mosquito netting, while the windows are all fully screened in, allowing for a nice breeze to make its way in while you sleep sans insect intrusion. There’s also a high-powered ceiling fan to further keeps things cool in the sometimes brutally hot and humid climate of Popoyo.
The Common Spaces
Shared Bathrooms and Showers
Though your private cabaña may not have its own bathroom, the shared bathrooms and showers are kept in pristine condition and located just steps from your cabañas front steps. There are a total of two toilets and two showers available, and not once did I have to wait to use either - the beauty of a maximum 12 guests at any one time. There is apparently hot water in the showers, but you aren’t likely going to want or need it in Popoyo’s hot climate.
Communal Kitchen
There’s a fully-equipped kitchen, complete with an oven, fridge/freezer, toaster, french press, pots, pans, and utensils. It’s also where you’ll find the free filtered water. During my stay, it was the kitchen that became a beautiful crossroads for meeting and mingling with the other guests too. There are several small markets about a 5-minute walk from SUYO if you need to stock up on ingredients, plus a fresh fruit and veggie truck that passes the hotel daily.
Beachfront Terrace
Like the crown jewel of SUYO, the beachfront terrace beckons stargazers, sun worshippers, and yogis alike. I found myself laying out a yoga mat each morning for a flow and meditation facing the crashing waves. There are also several large cushions available for laying out under the sun and stars, a must at least once during your stay if you can rip yourself from your hammock.
The Location
Located on Playa Popoyo, between the surf points of Beginner’s Bay and Playa Santana, SUYO Cabañas could not be better located. It’s situated on a serene stretch of sand, with just the sound of the waves crashing to lull you to sleep. The only two markets in town are a five-minute walk from SUYO’s front door, and there’s a nice mix of restaurants and cafes also reachable on foot, many of which are attached to neighboring luxury hotels.
