Mezcal

Mezcal

Oaxaca is the capital of mezcal. The best way to enjoy it is at a palenque (mezcal farm). In town, it’s often served with a side of orange wedges and worm salt.

Champurrado

This hot chocolate-like beverage is prepared with cacao and corn flour and is popular during Dìa de los Muertos or daily alongside a Oaxacan tamale for breakfast.

Tepache

Tepache is a local pre-hispanic drink made from fermented pineapple peels. It’s traditionally served with a dusting cinnamon and chili powder.

Chocolate de Agua o Leche

You can’t leave Oaxaca without trying a fresh cup of Oaxacan hot chocolate. It’s not uncommon to enjoy find versions with hints of almond, cardamom, or hazelnut too.
