What to Drink in Oaxaca
Tejate
This Oaxacan beverage of toasted maize and fermented cacao beans dates back to the pre-colonial days.
Mezcal
Oaxaca is the capital of mezcal. The best way to enjoy it is at a palenque (mezcal farm). In town, it’s often served with a side of orange wedges and worm salt.
Champurrado
This hot chocolate-like beverage is prepared with cacao and corn flour and is popular during Dìa de los Muertos or daily alongside a Oaxacan tamale for breakfast.
Tepache
Tepache is a local pre-hispanic drink made from fermented pineapple peels. It’s traditionally served with a dusting cinnamon and chili powder.
Chocolate de Agua o Leche
You can’t leave Oaxaca without trying a fresh cup of Oaxacan hot chocolate. It’s not uncommon to enjoy find versions with hints of almond, cardamom, or hazelnut too.
