You’re Already Playing Your Part

Chicago City Scene.jpg

This message came through during a meditation recently. Like many, my life’s purpose has felt like a carrot I’m chasing, always a few steps ahead of me and shrouded in a dust cloud too dense to see exactly what it is. But the truth is it’s not. My purpose is already at play. Yours too. Let me tell you why.

Consider your body for example. Your body has many parts, and beyond the river of blood flowing through your veins, each of these parts tends to hold down the space in which its located, performing its job for the greater body system. Your toenail, for example, doesn’t abandon its station to go searching in your elbow or eyeball for its place in the body system. It just exists and plays its part in protecting our toes, the part even our fingernails couldn’t play just so.

Now extend this metaphor out into the greater world. You are the toenail (or the heart or the elbow, etc.), so to speak. Your role is already being played, simply because you exist in this global body. Your role, your purpose, is not a someday thing. It’s here. It’s now and it’s always been right here, right now. It’s when our sights are set on some future achievement, some future glory, some future sense of purpose, that we forget that we’re already playing a valuable and crucial part on the planet just by being here. You as you. Me as me. when we don’t believe this truth we interfere with the role we’re already playing, that very important role. The role no other part or person could play the way I do, the way you do.

What if, just for a day, you put the searching and striving to contribute on pause and instead trusted that you’re already playing your part. From this perspective, you can observe the ways in which you are pulled into the scene. When are you and your skills activated? When do you feel called to speak or act? And what did this very tuned in presence add to the whole this day? Take it moment by moment, day by day. And observe the part you play.

My assignment for myself this day, this life, is to let my role emerge. To jump into the chaos of life knowing that I am playing a role here whether I am consciously aware of what it is yet or not. To stop interfering with a flow of life that needs no interference. To remember that my part, big or small, is as important as any other part or person’s because without it, the body can’t function as it’s designed to. To know and believe that it’s safe to lay down the searching and instead let my part, your part, be revealed in the simple and effortless playing of it.
