If you’re wondering where to stay on the Peninsula de Maraú, these are the five properties I personally stayed at while exploring the region and would highly recommend.

The Peninsula de Maraú isn’t the kind of destination where you book one hotel and call it a day.

This stretch of Bahia’s coastline is spread across small villages, coconut groves, lagoons, and miles of sand roads. Each area offers a completely different experience—from quiet surf villages to sunset beach towns and tide pools.

During my time exploring the peninsula, I stayed in five different properties across Algodões, Cassange, Taipu de Fora, and Barra Grande. Each one offered something distinct, and together they paint a great picture of the different ways you can experience this part of Bahia.

Here’s where I stayed—and who each place is best for.

1. Na Villas (Algodões)

Best for: travelers who want comfort, quiet, and a central location in Algodões.

Na Villas strikes a beautiful balance between being right in the center of Algodões and feeling completely tucked away.

The property sits just across the road from one of my favorite lunch spots in the village, Obaê, yet once you step through the gate and into the garden you’re surrounded by lush vegetation and total calm.

Seven independent chalés are arranged around a shared pool and lounge garden, creating a layout that feels both social and private.

Each chalet includes:

  • a private covered patio with seating and hammock

  • king bed (with an additional twin in some rooms)

  • small dining area

  • stocked mini-fridge

  • spacious bathroom

  • air conditioning and smart TV

In the afternoons, complimentary tea and coffee appear at the bar, while mornings start with a generous breakfast spread of fresh fruit, yogurt, granola, Brazilian pastries, couscous, and more.

A helpful detail for Algodões specifically: the pousada is equipped with a backup generator, which keeps fans and lights running during the occasional power outages common in the village.

A small thing worth noting across Algodões (not unique to this property): groundwater in the region can be slightly brown and sulfur-smelling due to the natural aquifer. It’s normal and something you’ll likely encounter anywhere in the area.

Overall, Na Villas is an excellent base in Algodões for couples, solo travelers, and families alike.

2. Surf & Yoga Retreats (Algodões)

Best for: surfers, yogis, and travelers looking for a wellness-oriented retreat.

Surf & Yoga Retreats offers a very different experience from a traditional pousada. Staying here feels more like joining a small retreat community for a few days.

The lodge sits tucked into lush Atlantic Forest just a short walk from the beach. My room had floor-to-ceiling windows on two sides, looking straight into jungle where monkeys occasionally swung through the trees.

The stay includes breakfast and dinner each day, and the rhythm of the retreat revolves around shared meals with the other guests—one of the best parts of the experience.

Guests can choose between several options:

  • Room + meals only

  • Surf package (daily lessons)

  • Yoga package (daily classes)

  • Surf + yoga combo

I opted for the yoga package and borrowed boards each day to surf the nearby beach break.

Because of the retreat structure and the sense of community it creates, this is a place that’s best enjoyed for at least three nights—and ideally closer to a week.

If you’re looking for a wellness-focused stay surrounded by nature, this is a special one.

3. Pousada Lagoa do Cassange (Cassange)

Best for: travelers who want a destination stay immersed in nature.

Pousada Lagoa do Cassange sits in one of the most unique locations on the entire peninsula—between the Atlantic Ocean and a freshwater lagoon.

The moment you arrive, it feels like you’ve stepped into a self-contained world.

I stayed in one of the bungalows nestled among the coconut grove, which included:

  • queen bed and additional twin

  • air conditioning

  • dining table

  • hot water shower

  • hammock and outdoor clothesline

There are also beachfront bungalows, a larger villa, and multi-room options for groups.

The pousada is well equipped to help guests enjoy the surrounding landscape. Complimentary gear includes:

  • surfboards

  • paddleboards

  • kayaks on the lagoon

  • volleyball

The property’s restaurant serves both local dishes like moqueca and more international options, and breakfast is included each morning. Drinking water is available all day for refilling bottles.

Because of its location and amenities, Lagoa do Cassange is the kind of place where you might arrive and suddenly forget about leaving the property at all.

4. Solar Pitanga (Taipu de Fora)

Best for: travelers wanting easy access to Taipu de Fora’s famous natural pools.

Solar Pitanga is a charming family-run pousada created by its owners, Marcos and Marina from Brasilia.

The property sits just steps from Taipu de Fora’s famous tide pools, one of the peninsula’s most well-known natural attractions.

Each room includes:

  • air conditioning

  • tea kettle

  • smart TV

  • mini fridge

  • private patio with hammock and small dining area

  • drying rack for wet swimsuits, towels, and beach gear

Breakfast here was one of my favorites on the peninsula, with local treats like:

  • fresh cacao juice

  • coconut cake

  • fried bananas

  • yogurt

  • tapioca made to order

One of the best features of Solar Pitanga is that Marcos and Marina also rent quads and fat-tire bikes directly.

I highly recommend taking a quad out to explore the nearby Trilha das Bromélias and the lighthouse for sunset. It’s also one of the easiest ways to get around Taipu de Fora once the roads go quiet after dark.

5. Nirvana Beach Hotel (Barra Grande)

Best for: romantic stays, quiet retreats, and nature lovers.

Nirvana Beach Hotel might have been the most visually striking stay of my entire trip.

My room was completely immersed in forest, with slatted doors opening to a private terrace overlooking the trees and yet still featuring the sounds of the ocean down below. The architecture blends beautifully with the environment, featuring built-in concrete furniture and a shower that can transform into an outdoor shower simply by sliding open a panel.

There’s no air conditioning (fan only), but the forest surroundings keep the rooms surprisingly comfortable, and the sounds of nature quickly become part of the experience.

Each morning begins with a delicious breakfast (included in the stay), and at 4pm afternoon tea appears with fresh cake baked by Andrea, one of the pousada’s always smiling staff.

Guests can also:

  • borrow kayaks to explore the bay

  • relax in cozy common areas filled with books and games

At sunset, follow the trail down to the beach.

Turn right and you’ll reach breezy tide pools perfect for sunset views. Turn left and you’ll find Barra Grande’s beach clubs and bars.

The hotel sits at Ponta do Mutá, one of the most privileged sunset locations on the peninsula. It’s a bit removed from the busy center of Barra Grande, but easily reachable by beach walk during the day or mototaxi at night.

For couples, solo travelers seeking quiet, or even intimate weddings, this place feels truly special.

How to Choose Where to Stay on the Peninsula de Maraú

Each area of the peninsula offers a different atmosphere:

Algodões

  • quiet surf village

  • great for nature and slow travel

Cassange

  • remote and peaceful

  • best for disconnecting completely

Taipu de Fora

  • famous natural pools

  • good mix of restaurants and nature

Barra Grande

  • liveliest town

  • sunset views, restaurants, nightlife

If you have time, the best way to experience the peninsula is actually staying in more than one place, which is exactly what I did.
